Timing is everything in life. We are lucky enough to exist in a magical era where engine dynamics, electronics and turbochargers have intersected. In this Turbo Edition we will scour over some of the wickedest factory turbo offerings to grace the roads of Metropolis. The idea here is to fire the imagination and inspire anyone looking for that next project; and who among us is not ready to spring on that lonely, abandoned diamond in the rough? The points system is a way to compare the engines against their peers. Enjoy.
100 pts.
Warp Drive w/Turbo Core; USS Enterprise NCC-1701-T
97 pts.
Toyota 2JZ-GTE; Supra
The fact that savvy tuners on their A-Game can coax 800-whp from an internally stock 2JZ still blows my mind. Real people drive real 1000 to 1200-whp Supras on the street...don't believe me, attend a Supras Invade Las Vegas or Texas Supra meet and see these physics-challenging machines for yourself. Long the import king of the drag strip, Supra power has propelled numerous cars deep into the 6.60s and well over 210 mph putting the scare into NHRA Pro Stockers in the process. The Titan Motorsports Celica blasted an awe-inspiring 6.40 at 220 mph.
96 pts.
Nissan RB26DETT; Skyline GT-R
The tiebreaker between the Supra and Skyline is availability. One has to be impressed with an engine designed to JTC sanctioning body specs from the block on up that goes out and sees nothing but checkered flags 29 times in a row. During this epic run the GT-R strung together back-to-back championships amid weight penalties no less and was ultimately banned and ushered into its own series-that's domination. The RB26DETT is the ultimate de-tuned race engine. Early versions were fitted with a yellow boost restriction valve in the vacuum lines. Pop this out and the boost-up program is on its way. Like the 2JZ, Nissan's RB26DETT screams for serious mods and delivers four-digit power when you answer the call.
93 pts.
Porsche 3.6-L Twin Variable Turbine Nozzle Turbos; 2008 Porsche 911
The 997's pulse-pounding turbocharged Flat-6 has be pinging on Nissan's radar since the GT-R's R33 iteration. While it was the benchmark for the new GT-R, the 911 Turbo has long been the archenemy of Skyline pilots in Japan. Porsche does turbos right. Its design criteria has always been weighted toward pure performance with all concerns regarding mass production kicked to the curb. Case in point, Stuttgart's innovative 2008 VTN set-up that pumps out 480 horsepower; that's 133 hp per liter.
91 pts.
Mitsubishi 4G63; Eclipse, Talon, Laser, Lancer Evolution
Running neck and neck with the SR20, U.S. availability proved to be the defining factor in the 4G63's one-point edge. The 4G63 has powered WRC champions, flexed considerable muscle down the quarter mile. Look no further than intrepid Brent Rau's NOPI Pro Outlaw Eclipse and its sizzling 6.97 at 198 mph.
Its latest host, the poignantly named Evolution, is the 4G63 at its pinnacle of performance, with variable valve technology and willing acceptance of boost-up mods. While the Evo X will drop with an all-new 4B11-T powerplant, the 4G has long since secured its place in the turbo-4 Hall of Fame and there will be power parts aplenty in the aftermarket pipeline for years to come.
90 pts.
Nissan SR20DET; Silvia, Sunny GTi-R
Destined to power 240SXs and Datsun 510s on a swap basis in America, the SR20DET is a stout, ball-busting engine that takes no prisoners. Poised for a boost-up in stock trim, built versions have little aversion to pumping out 450whp in street trim. With a quick valvetrain reinforcement regime the SR is a classic and vital drift powerplant that is quite comfortable hovering around redline speeds.
87 pts.
Mazda 13B-REW; RX-7
The factory turbocharged 13B really hits its stride with the REW version that buzzed under the hood of the third-generation FD RX-7. Its 255 hp rating can be scoffed at when its competition pushed 300-plus. But to properly frame the potency of Mazda's rotary wonder consider it 255 horses are generated from 1.3 liters which translates into 196 hp per liter. Wow. The quirky rotary has a passionate, cult-like following in America, Puerto Rico and Australia. Properly built and precision tuned 13Bs can churn out prodigious power but you can't just add a boost controller and spin the dial you have to be clever and earn you just rewards.
84 pts.
Subaru EJ20/EJ25; WRX, WRX STi
Another eclectic engine, the Boxer 4 EJ series draws on decades of WRC success to put down power, and the competition. The EJ20 paved the way for the latest wave of rally bred street cars and without its popularity the Evo would have never made it across the Pacific. Don't be fooled by its meekish 224-hp rating, minor mods can conjure big numbers; the EJ is a player.
80 pts.
Buick 3.8-liter SFI Turbo, Grand National, '89 Trans Am
The GN's 3.8-liter is not a big hitter at 235 horsepower but it was supremely tunable and came around as electronic fuel injection technology and ECU tuning converged. A number of legendary tuners cut their teeth on the GN. Back in the day a popular ad read, "Run 12s for $600" it was true.
78 pts.
EcoTec Turbo; Solstice, Sky, Cobalt SS
The EcoTec Turbo engine is probably GM's best bullet this side of the LS series of V8s. Using data gleaned from a highly successful sport compact drag racing program, the General unleashed a 2.0-liter, 260-horse gem available in the daringly designed Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters and the new for 2008 Cobalt SS. While the aftermarket support is not as widespread as its competition there are a number of reputable companies putting out some well-designed and well-targeted parts for the EcoTec.
72 pts.
Toyota 3S-GTE; Celica All-Trac, MR2
Take notice, the 3S-GTE is the original rally bred, turbo-4, all-wheel drive homologation special. Carlos Sainz power-slid to the 1990 WRC championship in a 3S Celica and the 1990-1992 ST185 series All-Tracs still demand good money on the used-car market. Likewise, the MR2 is a popular commodity and the aftermarket support for this engine is decent.
Temple Of Boost Honor Roll
Nissan VG30DET; 300ZX
VW 2.0T; Jetta, New Beetle, Passat, GTI
Mazda B6-T; 323 GTX, Mercury Capri
Isuzu 4XE1-WT; Impulse RS
Ford SVO 2.3; Mustang, Merkur XRT4, Thunderbird
Mitsubishi G54B; Starion ESI, Conquest TSi
Dodge 2.2, Omni GLH, Daytona, Charger, Spirit
GM 4.3-L Vortec Turbo; Syclone, Typhoon
